Protect Your Vision in a Digital World

In today’s world, digital screens play a huge role in our everyday lives. From smartwatches to flat-screen TVs, it’s likely that a large part of our lives is connected to digital technology. They can make our lives significantly easier and were designed to do so, but are you aware of the effect they have on your eyes?

The average adult spends as much as 12 hours a day in front of TVs and computers. In a time where many jobs have switched to virtual communications and working from home, it’s no doubt that digital screens make up a considerable portion of our days.

As helpful as they can be, looking at digital screens all day can cause an uncomfortable condition called digital eye strain. If you’re feeling fatigued and sore after a day on the computer, digital eye strain could be the culprit. Give our office a call or request an appointment to find out today!

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain is the discomfort you feel after focusing on something close by for too long. If you’ve ever felt like you can’t keep your eyes open while looking at your computer screen or you’ve gotten a headache after a long day at work, you might be experiencing eye strain!

Many different things can cause digital eye strain, but it often occurs due to an uncomfortable workspace and posture. Low lighting, glare, poor posture, uncorrected vision problems, or a combination of these can make it difficult for your eyes to focus, causing discomfort.

Symptoms of digital eye strain are not hard to miss. You’ll often feel tired after a long day at work, and you could have a headache or sore muscles. Generally, you’ll feel discomfort that gets progressively worse with long periods of near work.

Specifically, symptoms of digital eye strain include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision.
  • Dry eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Preventing Digital Eye Strain

The good news about digital eye strain is that it’s completely preventable! Following a few steps to make your workspace more comfortable will make it easier on your eyes so you can focus and stay productive. These steps include:

  • Keeping your computer screen an arm’s length from your eyes and just below eye level so your gaze is slightly downward.
  • Positioning any reference materials or documents below the screen and above the keyboard.
  • Positioning your screen to avoid glare from lighting or windows.
  • Adjusting your screen’s brightness and contrast to match your environment.
  • Sitting in a chair with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Remembering to blink!
  • Following the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away.

If you’re following these steps but still experiencing significant discomfort, there may be a different cause. Be sure to give us a call, and we’ll book you in for a comprehensive eye exam.
