Keep Your Eyes Feeling Comfortable

If your eyes frequently feel dry and gritty, you may have dry eye disease. Dry eye disease is an uncomfortable condition that can leave your eyes craving moisture. Over the counter eye drops can be a quick fix, but if you find you’re frequently reaching for them, you should see your optometrist!

At Acuity Vision Optometry Boutique, we want your eyes to feel comfortable and healthy. If you suspect you may have dry eye disease, we’d love to help. When you visit us for an assessment, we’ll run a few diagnostic tests on your eyes to determine whether it’s dry eye disease or another underlying health concern.

Signs & Causes of Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease can develop for various reasons. These include:

If the tear film covering the surface of your eye is not in balance, it may cause your eyes to feel parched. Your tears are responsible for keeping your eyes feeling lubricated and for washing away any bacteria or debris. When your tear film is out of balance, you may develop dry eyes.

Your tears are made up of 3 layers: an oily layer, a watery layer, and a mucus layer. Each is responsible for a different function to keep the eyes healthy and clean:

  • The outer oily layer keeps the surface of the tear smooth and prevents it from evaporating too quickly.
  • The watery middle layer keeps the eye lubricated, washes away bacteria, and protects the cornea.
  • The inner mucus layer keeps the tear fastened to the eye.

Treating Dry Eye Disease

Meibomian gland expression involves removing blockages in the meibomian glands responsible for producing meibum (oil) to the tear film. Pressure is applied to the eyelids to express the glands and squeeze out the oils. Sometimes, small instruments are used to compress the eyelids. We may also apply a warm compress before expressing the eyelids to soften hardened oils clogging the glands.

AB Max, or microblepharoexfoliation, involves removing crusting and bacteria from the eyelids along the lash line. The procedure helps remove any harmful bacteria that can lead to inflammation and other eye discomforts. It helps to reduce chronic symptoms, like itching or stinging related to dry eye disease and blepharitis.

Punctal plugs are tiny inserts placed in the tear ducts to prevent your tears from draining too quickly. They can act as a temporary or long-term solution, depending on the type of plugs used. Depending on your lifestyle and current ocular health, we will recommend what plugs suit you best.
