Imagine a World Free From Glasses & Contacts!

If you have a refractive error, like myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, you’re probably familiar with a world where you need glasses or contacts to see clearly. You’ve probably also heard of refractive surgery, also called laser eye surgery, as an alternative to corrective eyewear. Refractive surgery has become a very common procedure performed in clinics worldwide to correct refractive errors and improve vision.

Refractive surgery, like LASIK or PRK, can reduce the time you need to wear glasses or contacts in a day. In some cases, it may eliminate your need for them altogether! If you’re interested in refractive surgery, Acuity Vision Optometry Boutique offers stellar pre- and-post-operative care and can help you determine which procedure is best for you.

Types of Refractive Surgery

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is one of the most well-known refractive procedures in the United States. The surgery involves creating a flap in the cornea’s outer layer (the epithelium) using a femtosecond laser. The flap is then pushed aside, and the laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct how light refracts when it enters the eye. LASIK is an effective treatment for refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

A thorough consultation before scheduling LASIK is necessary, as there are several risks associated with the procedure. Certain eye conditions and underlying health concerns may make LASIK an unsuitable treatment. It’s always best to discuss the procedure with your optometrist to make sure it’s right for you.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is another common refractive surgery that may be a suitable option for patients with thinner corneas. During the procedure, your surgeon uses a special brush, blade, laser, or alcohol solution to remove your cornea’s outer layer, called the epithelium. They’ll then use a laser to reshape your cornea to correct your refractive error. After the procedure, they’ll place a contact lens over your eye to act as a bandage while your eye heals.

PRK is an effective treatment for refractive errors. It may be more suitable than other procedures if you have dry eye disease or live a highly active lifestyle. However, we will discuss this alongside any associated risks to ensure you make an informed decision.

The Consultation

During the consultation, we’ll first sit down to discuss your goals and current health. We’ll also ask about your vision needs based on your lifestyle. For example, if you’re an avid sports player, you may want to correct your distance vision to improve your performance.

We’ll talk about your expectation for refractive surgery and answer all your questions. It’s important to note that any refractive procedure will likely correct your vision, but you may still need a mild prescription in eyeglasses or contact lenses for certain activities.

We’ll then run a few diagnostic tests to ensure you’re a good candidate for refractive surgery. Some of these tests include:

  • Vision test
  • Checking for other eye problems
  • Measurement and mapping the surface of your cornea
  • Measurement of your pupil size

Once the consultation is complete, we’ll recommend a procedure for you and provide a referral to one of the excellent ophthalmologists we work with in the area.
